Identify three potential points that you could have made in your essay for Question 1 (Shirky, audiences and producers). -  The Voice should be successful – the opportunities that are offered by digital media and the new media landscape in targeting niche audiences could provide an ideal platform for a strong black British voice. However, the poor construction of the website and social media presence -Teen Vogue reflects the challenges major media producers such as Conde Nast have faced: declining print revenues, changing audience habits, the

Videogames: Further feminist theory

Image
As part of our study of women in videogames, we need to develop our understanding of feminist theory. We have looked at a range of feminist ideas earlier in the course including Laura Mulvey, Judith Butler, Angela McRobbie, the concept of post-feminism and more. We now need to explore this further by bringing in the work of bell hooks and Liesbet van Zoonen. Notes from the lesson Watch this short extract from Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox interviewing bell hooks at The New School in New York: Further feminist theory: blog tasks Use our Media Factsheet archive on the M: drive Media Shared (M:\Resources\A Level\Media Factsheets) to find Media Factsheet #169 Further Feminist Theory. Save it to USB or email it to yourself so you have access to the reading for homework. Read the whole of Factsheet and answer the following questions: 1) What definitions are offered by the factsheet for ‘feminism ‘and ‘patriarchy’? Feminism is a movement which aims fo

Video games: Women in video games

Image
Women in videogames The representation of women in videogames has long been considered sexist. Female characters are rarely playable and usually reinforce traditional gender stereotypes. Games that did feature female characters presented them as damsels in distress or sex objects. Lara Croft of the Tomb Raider series is one of the most iconic characters in videogame history. But while she is a strong, independent playable character, her appearance and costume turned her into a digital sex object.   Tropes vs Women in Video Games Vlogger and gaming expert Anita Sarkeesian has produced two series of YouTube videos documenting the representation of women in videogames. Vlogging as Feminist Frequency, the series are an important example of digital feminism (and a superb resource for Media students). However, as a result, she has been a target for online abuse and threats – most notably as part of the #gamergate controversy. Women and videogames: blog tasks

The Voice: Stars speak out about R Kelly

Image
Stars speak out about R Kelly's documentary A documentary was aired on BBC reporting among the life of R Kelly and his shameful experiences with underage girls, different women spoke out about their traumatising experiences with R Kelly and how he would physically and mentally abuse them. This documentary was posted all over social media and was made viral, Different stars such as Meek Mill, Omarion, Jada Pinkett and Chance the Rapper expressed their feelings and how disgusted they were by his actions. I class this as hard news as it affected plenty lives and young girls, many people could relate to the abuse these young girls experienced which goes on to why they'd read it. People would read this for Personal Identity, Relationships and Surveillance: Personal identity: People may have experienced similar things as the girls and feel they can relate  Surveillance: Seeing as this is a viral story people want to keep up.

Teen Vogue: Stevante Clark is Running for Mayor of Sacramento

Image
Stevante Clark is Running for Mayor of Sacramento Stevante Clark is running for Mayor of Sacramento after his younger brother, Stephon Clarke (22 years of age) was shot to death by Sacramento police officers as they "mistook" his cell phone for a gun and murdered him in his Grandmother's back yard. Stevante Clarke gained public attention when he stood in front of a confrontation  at a Sacramento City Council meeting telling people the council had failed them. In my opinion this is hard news as it has to do with politics and a major racial issue that has become dominant in the United States of America. It touches upon the death of a young black man who did not deserve it. People would read this for surveillance and personal identity : - People of the same race may be able to relate to the young boy or people who belong in minority groups overall will feel more passionate about this racial abuse  - People could use this article as surveillance seei
