Representation Intro

1) List the different people/groups represented in the trailer (men/women/Americans etc.)

- Females
- Parents
- Males
- Europeans
- White Americans

2) For each group you identify, decide whether the representation is a dominant or alternative portrayal. Explain why you think this.

Females: This is a dominant portrayal seeing as they come across as very sensitive and helpless because they need male to save them.

Parents: It is a very dominant portrayal because parents everywhere are made to seem very caring and protective of their children and in this trailer this is enforced.

Males : Made to seem very aggressive and angry which is a dominant portrayal seeing as they are committed crimes and we see the father making threats and doing lots of violent things.

Europeans: They are made to seem dangerous and always involved in some type of illegal business which is a dominant stereotype.

White Americans: Especially males are made to seem as if they have an obsession with guns therefore this is a dominant portrayal because there is lots of action shown in the trailer.

3) What stereotypes can you identify in the trailer?
- The weak and dependent women.

- The savage and hot-headed males.
- The unreliable and dangerous Europeans.
- The white American is the hero.

4) Why might the Taken trailer offend or alienate certain groups?

- The Taken trailer could offend some women, especially feminist seeing as it makes it seem as if females must have the help of a male in order to get out of a problem, and it makes women seem extremely weak and emotional.
- Europeans could be offended because it makes them seem criminal.

5) Why do mainstream film and television texts such as Taken so often use stereotypes?

- Because the audience would most likely understand it better so it would appeal more to them.
