Intro to feminism

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?

- She noticed she had been experiencing sexual harassment too frequently and she didn't do nothing because it it classed as normal in today's society but then she done research on the treatment of women and noticed that women were treated very unequal so she started the project for people of both genders all across the world to share their experiences.

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?

- The use of a website.

3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?

-  This is because it would not be as successful unless she had access to the internet seeing as she would not being to reach such wide range of audience all over the world, For example Brazil would be a hard place to reach without new technology.

4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?

- In my opinion, society has been so indoctrinated that majority of people actually believe it is okay to treat women worse then men are treated and they think it is okay for women to not get paid as much as men in most jobs and these things have become such norms that I don't think they can be fixed easily, therefore I don't think there is a point in the future where the Everyday Sexism Project would not be needed.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?

- Networked feminism is the idea that in the modern day, social media and the internet is used a lot in order to alert people of the problems women face everyday however this is a problem seeing as there is new media produced everyday there are millions of other problems also being published which doesn't give feminism as much attention as is wanted.

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave ‘networked feminism’?

The first wave began in the 19th century which was all about suffrage, the second wave began in 1960's which was about equal rights, the third wave is when we entered the post feminism in 1990, and the fourth wave is known as networked feminism which is how promotion over internet is used.

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a 100-word summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?

- I think that the Everyday Sexism project is the fourth wave media seeing as the website is completely dependant on the internet and connecting with different people all over
