Representation theory

1) Why is representation an important concept in Media Studies? It is important as it gives us a idea of what something is like. The way something is represented is extremely important in media because we can analyse from this. 2) How does the example of Kate Middleton show the way different meanings can be created in the media? Intro to feminism

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project? - She noticed she had been experiencing sexual harassment too frequently and she didn't do nothing because it it classed as normal in today's society but then she done research on the treatment of women and noticed that women were treated very unequal so she started the project for people of both genders all across the world to share their experiences. 2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies? - The use of a website. 3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project? -  This is because it would not be as successful unless she had access to the internet seeing as she would not being to reach such wide range of audience all over the world, For example Brazil would be a hard place to reach without new technology.  4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required

Feminism Theory

1) What are the two texts the article focuses on? -  Down with Love  (2003), Virgin Airlines sexist and retro Eighties  adverts featuring air hostesses - Beyonce's "Why don't you love me?" music video  2) What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)? -  They cause  male characters in the airport to turn and stare;  while the stewardesses don’t acknowledge  these looks, there is a knowing and empowered  quality to their walk and facial expressions. 1) List the different  people / groups  represented in the trailer (men/women/Americans etc.) - Females - Parents - Males - Europeans - White Americans 2) For each group you identify, decide whether the representation is a  dominant  or  alternative  portrayal. Explain why you think this. Females: This is a dominant portrayal seeing as they come across as very sensitive and helpless because they need male to save them. Parents: It is a very dominant portrayal because parents everywhere are made to seem very caring and protective of their children and in this trailer this is enforced. Males : Made to seem very aggressive and angry which is a dominant portrayal seeing as they are committed crimes and we see the father making threats and doing lots of violent things. Europeans: They are made to seem dangerous and always involved in some type of illegal business which is a dominant stereotype. White Americans: Especially males are made to seem as if they have an obsess

People would see lots of models and famous celebrities wearing Gucci which makes them seem even more glamorous. They chose very rich looking colours to be there main (red, green) which go very well together and make people stand out when they put it on. Gucci is about looking your very best and being confident. Fashionable   Apple is simply about keeping up with media and the most advanced technology at the moment. Ofcom Report 1) How does the report suggest that TV viewing is changing? -The report is suggesting that people are using other devices to view things on instead of the basic tv. 2) What differences are highlighted between younger and older viewers? -The differences are that  “viewers aged 65+ watched an average of 5h and 44 mins in 2016"  where as  " 16-24 year olds watched an average of 1h and 54 mins in 2016",  which simply means that older people watch more tv then younger people. 3) Does the report suggest audiences are satisfied with public service broadcasting TV channels? - The report does suggest that audiences are satisfied with public service broadcasting because it clearly states that 78% of viewers were satisified 4) Public service broadcasting channels are a major aspect of the UK cultural industries.
